Abstract

This study aims to analyze the morphometric, geomorphological, and hydrological characteristics of the Wadi Tayyeb Al-Ism Basin in northwestern Libya, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Digital Elevation Models (DEM). The research employs a quantitative spatial analysis approach to derive key morphometric parameters related to basin area, length, perimeter, slope, and drainage density, in order to interpret their geomorphological and hydrological implications. The findings reveal that the basin has an elongated and irregular shape controlled by geological structures and general surface gradients, indicating a youthful geomorphological stage dominated by active vertical erosion and fluvial incision. The drainage network exhibits moderate to high density and structural integration, reflecting efficient runoff and rapid hydrological response to rainfall. The topographic features show moderate to high relief and noticeable ruggedness, signifying the continued influence of tectonic and erosional processes in shaping the basin. The study concludes that integrating spatial technologies such as GIS and DEM provides an accurate framework for quantifying and interpreting basin dynamics. This contributes to a better understanding of watershed behavior and highlights the significance of morphometric analysis in water resource management and flood hazard assessment within arid and semi- arid environments of Libya.
