Medicine and Physicians in al-Andalus during the Umayyad Emirate Period (138–316 AH / 756–929 AD)

Abstract

This article discusses medicine and physicians in al-Andalus during the Emirate period (138–316 AH / 756–929 AD). It explains the transition from reliance on Greek books and Christian medical knowledge preserved in monasteries and churches to significant medical development under the Umayyad emirs. It highlights rulers' support for learning, translation, and imported works, as well as the emergence of physicians who left a notable scientific legacy and extended care beyond rulers and the nobility to poorer and broader social groups.
