The Administration of the Roman Empire in the Late Third Century: The Model of Diocletian

Abstract

This study examines the administration of the Roman Empire in the late third century CE through Emperor Diocletian's reign (284–305 CE), amid political, military, and economic crisis. It analyzes his administrative, military, fiscal, and monetary reforms, especially the Tetrarchy, provincial reorganization, and separation of civil and military authority, with particular attention to Egypt. The study concludes that these reforms restored a measure of stability and paved the way for later administrative and political developments.
