Drug Use in Libyan Society: A Sociological Analytical Reading in Light of Differential Opportunity Theory
Keywords:
Drugs, Differential opportunity, Social deprivation, Sociological devianceAbstract
This study analyzes drug use and trafficking in Libyan society through Differential Opportunity Theory. It argues that the phenomenon is driven by structural causes, including weak state institutions, social injustice, youth marginalization, unemployment, poverty, family disintegration, insecurity, and spiritual and religious gaps. Drug-related deviance is therefore not merely individual behavior but a product of a fragmented social and economic environment. The study recommends comprehensive preventive policies that address these root causes, empower youth, improve living conditions, combat corruption, and strengthen social responsibility.
